On the way to Morelia, Michoacán from visiting the Monarch butterflies I saw the Mexico I’d seen in movies and my imagination… huge hills tinted blue with agave fields, cactus growing wild, massive mirror-like lakes, an occasional tumbleweed dancing wildly in the wind… I finally felt like I’d began exploring!

A Vegan in Mexico

When I started backpacking in Mexico I was worried that being vegan I’d starve before I learned what I could and couldn’t eat. The first few days were tricky & I lived on fruit since I could buy (and recognize) it without knowing Spanish. I quickly realized that the first words I needed to learn were food related because of my limited diet.

If you’re in Mexico between November and March I’d recommend heading out to one of the butterfly sanctuaries in the state of Michoacán, Mexico. The I visited Santuario Sierra Chincua yesterday and it’s a sight I’ll never forget!

This Sunday I visited Tonalá which is a massive outdoor market is open Thursdays and Sundays and showcases the many arts and crafts from the area. It’s about 20 minutes from the center of Guadalajara by bus and is definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area. Here’s some photo’s I took that day.
