One of the best lists I've seen. I've been traveling around the world now for 13 years (not continuously!) and have now stopped using a backpack or suitcase simply because it would be easier to have a giant neon target saying "Tourist" on my back. I now use a Tom Bihn Aeronaut(45 litres) because I can carry it on. Along with this I discovered Scott eVests which have upto 28 pockets and can hold a Netbook or iPad. Travelling is now alot simpler!.

All good points and ones I'm trying to stick too. In the process of buying all my gear at the moment then its time to pack and repack my backpack a few times. Then there is still time required to finish the itinerary and oh the list goes on.

Hi Brian, I've visited your site quite a few times while I was planning out my trip, you have an amazing amount of info on there! Thanks for blogging it all, very helpful for newbie travellers like myself :)

The shots cost a fortune in Canada! I can't remember the final total, just the shock I felt at getting my next Visa bill. That was partially because I'm not sure of where I'll decide to go and I'd rather not have to deal with vaccinations in a place I may not speak the language.. so I got far more than may really be necessary.

I packed a 50 litre backpack with far more stuff than I really should have. I plan on adding my complete gear list soon and update it as I add / get rid of stuff since seeing what others took helped me out quite a bit.

Happy travels!

I think you covered the essentials here. Skype is a blessing to keep anxious family and friends calm. How much did your shots cost in Canada?

I didn't go through all your posts yet, but how big of a bag did you take? Generally anything bigger than 50L is too much. Next time I'm on a RTW trip I would try to go 40L or less. Just makes it easier not to pay checked luggage fees or potentially lose the bag.

Continued safe travels!
