If you’re planning on a round the world adventure or are currently out travelling, how much of a language do you feel you should know for each country?

When I started backpacking in Mexico I was worried that being vegan I’d starve before I learned what I could and couldn’t eat. The first few days were tricky & I lived on fruit since I could buy (and recognize) it without knowing Spanish. I quickly realized that the first words I needed to learn were food related because of my limited diet.
