Sometimes we (or at least I do) need a bit of a reminder why we’re travelling all over the globe and what exactly it is that we’re hoping to find. Sometimes I’ll turn to other backpackers blogs, travel movies, deep thinking and at other times travel quotes are just the thing to get me back on track.
Here’s a few of my favourites, some are inspiring, some sadly true about life on the move, others are just plain silly and may put a smile on your face.
Do you know some great sayings or quotations about travelling? Share them in the comments.
“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” ~ Mark Twain
“Airplane travel is nature’s way of making you look like your passport photo.” ~ Al Gore
“We are torn between a nostalgia for the familiar and an urge for the foreign and strange. As often as not, we are homesick most for the places we have never known.” ~ Carson McCullers
“What you’ve done becomes the judge of what you’re going to do – especially in other people’s minds. When you’re traveling, you are what you are right there and then. People don’t have your past to hold against you. No yesterdays on the road.” ~ William Least Heat Moon
“Wandering re-establishes the original harmony which once existed between man and the universe.” ~ Anatole France
“Not until we are lost do we begin to understand ourselves.” ~ Henry David Thoreau
“Most travel is best of all in the anticipation or the remembering; the reality has more to do with losing your luggage.” ~ Regina Nadelson

“People travel to faraway places to watch, in fascination, the kind of people they ignore at home.” ~ Dagobert D. Runes
“To my mind, the greatest reward and luxury of travel is to be able to experience everyday things as if for the first time, to be in a position in which almost nothing is so familiar it is taken for granted.” ~ Bill Bryson

Not Directly Travel Related, but Great Quotes:
“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.” ~ Steve Jobs
“If you’re not living on the edge, you’re taking up too much space.” ~ Unknown
“The life you have led doesn’t need to be the only life you have.” ~ Anna Quindlen

I love that Mark Twain quote. :)
Gotta love Twain quotes!
Oddly I wasn’t a Twain fan until I began travelling and found his books are available as digital copies through Stanza and I finally read his stuff. I’m really starting to see why he’s so well liked.
What a fantastic list of quotes. Almost every one speaks to me with the sheen of some gestalt truth. That Carson McCullers quote is my favorite of the bunch.

LOVEEEEEE the quotes
Some of the quotes reminded me of one of my favorites:
Come, my friends,
‘Tis not too late to seek a newer world.
Push off, and sitting well in order smite
The sounding furrows; for my purpose holds
To sail beyond the sunset, and the baths
Of all the western stars, until I die.
from “Ulysses” by Alfred Lord Tennyson
“Your experience is narrow, so don’t ruin it extant someone else’s lifespan. Don’t be treed by dogma – which is experience with the results of remaining people’s thinking. Don’t let the racket of other’s opinions cover out your own inward vocalisation. And most burning, bonk the bravery to imitate your viscus and opinion. They someways already live what you really requirement to turn. Everything added is standby.”

Here is my favourite travel quote:
“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Discover.” – Mark Twain
In other words – no regrets, life is too short :)

The quote by unkown, about living on the edge is now my new favourite !
Dave B recently wrote: Day off in Huanuco
“Of the gladdest moments in human life, methinks, is the departure upon a distant journey into unknown lands. Shaking off with one mighty effort the fetters of Habit, the leaden weight of Routine, the cloak of many Cares and the slavery of Home, one feels once more happy. The blood flows with the fast circulation of childhood …. A journey, in fact, appeals to Imagination, to Memory, to Hope – the three sister graces of our moral being.”
– sir richard francis burton, 1856
mmmmm yum. i love this stuff.
“Take nothing but pictures” is simply cool!!!!
I have one to add to the list. I saw on a bumpersticker today, it said “Wherever you go it’s not an accident”.
Here is another one that I read on the computer-screensaver in a hostel in Rio de Janeiro and instantly loved it:
“Hapiness is a way of traveling, not a destination”
“I’m jealous of my luggage… it been more places than I have.”
“Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints”
Found on signs at beaches and campsites around Australia.
